Aeternal Chambers – Self Titled
Aeternal Chambers is a new three piece instrumental rock band that formed in 2023. The band members came from the European rock band Obiat and features Neil Dawson on drums and percussion, Raf Ruett on guitars, keys, and f/x, and Alex Nervo on bass, keys, and f/x. Both Neil and Raf are located in the United Kingdom and Alex is stationed all the way in Australia. The band just released their Self Titled, four song EP on October 14th 2024.
I love when I can listen to music and it takes me on a cosmic journey. Aeternal Chambers achieves that with their debut album. The songs are very expansive and carry me through a sonic adventure. The opening song “Husk Of Mortal Decay” begins in a soothing and enchanted atmosphere of keyboards and clean guitars which expand to the drums and bass. The slow and subtle build up of the song is done with ease and elegance. When the distortion kicks in on the guitars, it flows very smoothly and naturally. The band create swirling dynamics and channels the sound in such an elaborate way. The music sounds new age at times and heavy rock in a moments notice. The second track “Drive Me To Ruin” incorporates a rich bass sound flavored with spacy guitar flourishes and solid drumming. The song shifts into a rock grove while triggering keyboard layers in the background. Aeternal Chambers protracts sonically like Pink Floyd has done and expands the music into interesting and exciting areas. “Paved With Gold” carries this notion out strategically as it lays down a nice heavy bass riff with a clean guitar sound, synthesized nuanced effects, and powerful percussive pounding. The song then cranks back into the heavy rock riffing and holds the song structure seamlessly together. The band operates from the same sonic playbook as artists like 35007, My Sleeping Karma, and Monkey 3 (review here). The powerful light to heavy dynamics are what keeps this music so engaging.
By the time the fourth and final song, “Glitch In The Mist” begins, Aeternal Chambers has already amassed an audio experience of grand proportions. The song carries out the band’s formula for musical buildups with elaborate descending rhythms, as the song fades out. It’s really quite remarkable how put together the songs sound on this debut. The band crafts music like they have been playing together for a very long time. The fact that they are spread across the globe and manage to sound so “put together” is quite remarkable. I can’t wait to hear where they will go from here, but this is one hell of a start and an exceptional debut.
