Astralplane – Out Of The Void
Astralplane is a heavy psychedelic stoner rock band from Oslo, Norway. Consisting of three brothers, Lars Kristian J. Halvorsen on bass and vocals, Magnus J. Halvorsen on guitar and vocals, and Jørgen J. Halvorsen on drums and vocals, the trio just released their latest album called Out Of The Void. The band has released 2017’s Sly Serpent, 2019’s Three Kings EP, 2023’s Sly Serpent II, and 2025’s Out Of The Void. Out Of The Void was released on November 7th on Blues For The Red Sun Records and contains five tracks around forty two minutes long.
“Ascension” opens up with a seven minute cosmic head trip. The spacy rapture of psychedelic rock is smooth and heavy. Dynamic tones are dense and powerful utilizing some acoustic guitar and synths to fill in the space between fuzzy guitar riffs and bluesy leads. The title track “Out Of The Void” begins with a rhythmic percussion and airy guitar swirling. The hypnotic vocals of angelic harmony and clean singing draws you right into the music. The riffs crunch heavy at times and circle back into tribal essence. Astralplane majestically weaves back and forth with progressive tones of doom and heavy psychedelic sounds and imagery.
The third track called “Earthlings” begins with clean guitar strumming and cymbal splashing elegance. The song is a wonderful crescendo into space rock with soothing vocals, dense rhythms, and excellent dynamics. Astralplane are architects of sonic buildups showcasing a stellar array of cosmic tones and interesting transitions. The flow of their music is incredible with each instrument coming into form when the song calls upon them. “It Goes On” enhances that point magnificently. The gliding rhythms and exceptional song crafting skills are prominent with subtle changes accentuating the track. Each of the five songs presented here take the listener on an alluring sonic journey through the universe.
The fifth and final track entitled “Refugee Of The Universe” is the perfect cap on an amazing recording. The song starts off more riff-centric and blazes some rocking rhythms and hard driving grooves. Halfway through, the music down shifts slowly and elegantly into a bluesy and mind altering dose of heavy progressive psych. “Refugee Of The Universe” finds its way back into the hard riffing to close things off. It’s quite remarkable on how fulfilling these five songs are for a complete musical experience. The number of excellent bands and music that is emerging from Norway as of late, is staggering. Astralplane are one of those bands that are operating on such a high level of quality and delivering sonically satisfying music to my ears.
