Black Charger – Small Town

Black Charger is a stoner rock band from Osnabrück, Germany. They consist of Christian on guitar and vocals, Stephan on bass, and Uli on drums. They just released their debut full length album called Small Town on October 31st 2025. It contains ten tracks around forty two minutes long.

When the fuzz kicks in on the opening track “Liquor Store”, Black Charger is cranking into the riffs with a drive of determination. The ultra-fuzzy bass and distorted guitars are rocking with the thundering drumming. The music is very straight forward and catchy with Christian’s powerful voice dropping in the hooks. “Gimme The Gun” begins with the discordant bass fuzz grinding as the drums join in a measure later. The guitars sprinkle in leads that build into the main rhythm, where everything is dialed in. The heavy groove of these riffs are    very satisfying. The Kyuss influences are evident and they have a strong 90’s grunge sound too. The hardcore percussion is a huge asset as tracks like “Small Town” has that drum driven sound. Black Charger are really driven by the lead bass sound that is so prominent on every song on the album.

The fourth track, “Gray” has a swinging beat and haunting groove. It’s a heavy psychedelic rocker that utilizes noise rock and ambient sounds. It’s definitely the most versatile piece on Small Town. Whereas “Sound Outside” hits it hard and swinging. The catchy chorus and sleazy guitar sounds are the  main ingredients for a garage rock classic. “Walk With Me” is a cool and bouncy song that has smooth vocals. The bass is grooving the rhythm as the guitars are noisy statements of punk rock. The next track has a very energetic sound cranking through the speakers. “Super Ego” is a hard rocking venture into hardcore and psych. Brandishing heavy stoner riffs and the vivacious energy of punk, Black Charger is a great listen!

More drum-centric grooves like “Welcome” and a favorite of mine called “Snake Dance” are rocking out the beats. The fuzz is in full abundance here and the garage rocking ferocity is amplified. The last track is a dreamy and esoteric piece called “Red Picture With Horses”. It has a cool octave bass line grooving along with the rhythm. Small Town is a really good debut from these German stoner rockers. They have a lot of charm and character in their heavy fuzzed out sound. I look forward to following their journey with new material and the progressions that their music will bring.
