Bone Church – Deliverance
Bone Church is a hard rocking five-piece band from Connecticut. The lineup consists of Jack Rune on vocals, Dan Sefcik on lead guitar, Pat Good on bass, Nick Firine on guitar, and Rob Sickinger on drums. They have released 2017’s Self Titled, 2020’s Acid Communion, and their latest, 2025’s Deliverance. Deliverance arrived on October 24th on Ripple Music and contains seven tracks at thirty five minutes long.
There are rare occasions when I am completely immersed and connected to a recording of such high magnitude and intensity. I was already anticipating Deliverance to be a fantastic album by a band that I love and respect. However, the timing and sheer scale of impact that I feel when listening to this latest Bone Church album is something more remarkable and compelling. I feel that Deliverance is a near perfect record from start to finish. They have a special flow of how the songs blend together in a comprehensive and engaging way that tells a story with their music. Everything I love about the true hard rock of the seventies and the early eighties explosion of real heavy metal-Bone Church has it all covered on this one! I was lucky enough to see the band play live this past April (review here) and got to hear them open their set with the first track on Deliverance.
“Electric Execution” rips out of the gate with a high-octane rocker that gets everything started! The storm of nostalgia that spews out of the speakers with this one is overwhelming. Hard driven AC/DC rock that tracks New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Bone Church deliver a scorching number! The soaring vocals are amazing and carry the song with such catchy and contagious melodies. The sound quality and production is flawless. Every instrument is balanced accordingly and it’s nice to hear backing vocals on the chorus parts. The song is such an ear worm that it will be stuck in your head for days. If hard rock radio was such a thing, then “Electric Execution” would be number one.
The second track called “Lucifer’s Rising” is a total ripper! It grows with repeated listens but musically, it’s fantastic! Traditional heavy metal riffing is spiced up with acoustic guitars and an absolutely powerful vocal performance. Jack Rune’s voice has never sounded better! The song is a banger from beginning to end and makes you start to appreciate the different musical directions the band will take you in. “The Sins Of 1000 Heathens” connects nicely following “Lucifer’s Rising”, the dark themes that Bone Church recites from the past works of Acid Communion are expressed on these two songs nicely.
When the fourth track begins with a grooving heavy blues riff, I was instantly hooked! “Goin’ To Texas” is an anthem, waving the flag of southern rock with a heavy twist. The band deliver an instantly memorable song that is so good. Beautiful and bluesy rhythms with layers of tuneful keyboards, the whole song is a fun trip. Drummer Rob Sickinger delivers some brutal drum fills on this one too, which are awesome. The next song is definitely a connection to “Goin’ To Texas”, with its funky grove and story telling lyrics. “Muchachos Muchachin” is a stand out song that will get the attention of anyone. Its groove and tone are once again in the great company of a magnificent vocal performance. The bass tone of Pat Good’s playing is righteous and moves the song with some soul.
Bone Church sounds super tight on all of these songs. When “Bone Boys Ride Out” comes on, it’s another devastating rocker! Layered vocals with gang shouts and all, the band utilizes well placed keys for greater enhancement. It’s a straight up hard rock anthem that has a rebellious tone about it. The rhythms and leads are spot on and this song has been in the band’s arsenal for live performances, for years.
The seventh and final song is the title track “Deliverance”. This is probably the album’s magnum opus. The song is huge on so many levels and I couldn’t have heard it at a better time in my life. Personal problems have hindered me lately and listening to this album, and particularly this song, gives me so much power and hope. I could never thank the band enough for creating this masterpiece song and album. Musically speaking, Bone Church crank out the jams in a big way on this one. The whole song is structured elegantly, mixing heavy and soft dynamics with beautiful acoustic guitar action mid way through. The vocals are pristine and as powerful as ever. The scorching guitar leads from Dan Sefcik at the end of the song are amazing! It really caps off this eight and a half minute monster with one more lasting impression. Truth be told, I have listened to this album already well over a dozen times and I can’t get enough of it! It’s that damn good and will appeal to anyone into hard rock and heavy metal. Expect to see Deliverance in my top echelon of favorite albums of 2025, there’s no question.
