Brimstone Coven – The Light Shines Not For Thee

Brimstone Coven is a proto-metal, hard rock, bluesy doom band from Wheeling, West Virginia. They consist of Andrew D’Cagna on bass and vocals, Corey Roth on guitar and vocals, and Dave Trik on drums. The trio have released: 2014’s Self Titled, 2016’s Black Magic, 2018’s What Was And What Shall Be, 2020’s The Woes Of A Mortal Earth, and their latest, 2025’s The Light Shines Not for Thee. The Light Shines Not for Thee was self released on October 25th and contains eight tracks at forty minutes long.

No other current band today is performing traditional doom better than Brimstone Coven, in my opinion. The simply heavy and crushing doom riffs matched with some of the best vocal harmonies today, this band is amazing. “The Unknown” creeps with classic doom rock with giant build up riffs and crashing cymbals. The vocals are what really takes this over the top. They are powerfully melodic and beautiful. The catchiness in these songs is intoxicating! Brimstone Coven has a classic heavy metal aura that vibes nicely with the retro riff rocking prowess.

The second track entitled “A Man’s Demons” is a scorcher! It’s a hard driven seventies sounding classic that would have be huge back then. It’s a great tune that really displays the talents of the musicians. The blues-laced guitar leads are hot and the groove of the song is high energy. “Fly On” dials things back down with a more melodic tone, displaying classic metal licks. The band carries the torch for the pure old school heavy metal and it’s fantastic! Nothing flashy or elaborate about their music but just incredible well written songs that are memorable. “Pass You By” jumps back into the bouncy rock with flares of guitar harmonies. The music has an almost progressive jazz spark that is securely grounded in hard rock.

The second half of the recording opens with “Souls Intertwine”. It’s another terrific song that has a catchy rock groove and hook driven chorus melodies. The band are very tight and dedicated to their respective instruments. “Occupy” returns to the heavy doom riffage. The vocals lead and the music mesmerizes. The Sabbath flow and cosmic airiness in the vocals are a compelling combination. Brimstone Coven delivers a blissful mix of traditional doom and proto-metal. The next track is called “Something In The Air (This Is Not A Dream)”. It has a vibrant funky tone that rocks! The swinging grooves and infectious leads are amazing! These guys are masters at writing such catchy and engaging music. I feel they expressed more of their musical capabilities with this one, with its swagger. The song has a cool fade out where the bass guitar sounds it out. The tone of the bass is dense and growling and sounds terrific.

The eighth and final cut on The Light Shines Not For Thee is the excellent “Flesh Blood And Bone”. It has a very hypnotic essence in the flow of the song and swoons you in. The music takes you on a journey into consciousness. My mind is in a transcendental trance as I’m listening to this beautiful track. Brimstone Coven have produced yet another amazing release with The Light Shines Not For Thee. Don’t let this one sneak past your radar, it’s a decorative and ravishing release that will be a favorite for many hard riff rock listeners.
