Causa Sui – In Flux
Causa Sui is an instrumental psychedelic rock band from Odense, Denmark. Formed in 2004, they released a 2005 Self Titled and 2007 Free Ride album that featured vocals from Kasper Markus. When he left the band in 2008, Causa Sui decided to carry on as an instrumental and the line up consists of: Jess Kahr on bass, Jakob Skøtt on drums, Jonas Munk on guitar, electronics, and Rasmus Elm Rasmussen on keyboards. The band’s extensive album releases include: 2008/2009 Summer Sessions (Volume 1,2,&3), 2013’s Eporie Tide, 2016’s Return To Sky, 2017’s Vibraciones Doradas, and 2020’s Szabodelico. The band also released the Pewt’r Sessions (Volume 1,2,&3), and two live albums, 2014’s Live At Freak Valley, and 2017’s Live In Copenhagen. In 2024 they released From The Source (review here), their first studio album in about four years. Most of their records are on their own label, El Paraiso Records. On May 16th 2025, Causa Sui released their latest album called In Flux. It contains seven tracks in fifty minutes.
The style of music that Causa Sui play is a mix of psychedelic rock, jazz, experimental, ambient, stoner, and improvisational rock. The band that has been around for over two decades now and In Flux sounds as exuberant and vital as ever. Lead off track “The Circus Is Back” begins with the bass and expands into an airy psychedelic jazz ensemble of rock and new age sounds. The song flows right into “Milkweed’s Pod” and captures the improv dynamic feel that the band possesses. The instruments really come to life on these seven tracks with songs like “Silver In The Gathering Light” starting mellow and building on from there. Their ability to advance each track into exhilarating soundscapes and continue to produce such high quality music is a testament to the talents of the musicians. “Meledo” is a great example of the way the music percolates and brews into an expansive narrative of a sonic adventure. The progressive and cosmic sounds continues to evolve as the eleven minute musical journey moves along. Causa Sui has mastered this craft and can shift into other elaborate tones, as presented on the track “Boogie Lord’s Revenge”.
“Astral Shores” is perhaps the most expressive track on the album. The ethereal and spacious music has an intoxicating allure that circles around in your head. Swirls of atmospheric auditory elegance are embedded into the mind as the band plays lush and trippy melodies. Midway through the sixteen minute composition, the music slows to a crawl and then progressively begins its ascent upwards. The psychotropic effects and sounds are met with a percussive tapping that picks up the tempo as the music floats higher into progression. Not too many bands can pull off such emissive outcomes with their music. “Astral Shores” is a fascinating and mind-expanding piece of sonic subtlety.
In Flux closes with “Spree”, an electronic harpsichord of New Age music and sounds. It’s a beautiful piece that caps off another amazing recording from the Danish quartet. Fans of Monkey3, My Sleeping Karma, Yawning Man, and 35007 will absolutely dig this album. Causa Sui are one of the pioneers of cosmic instrumental space rock and In Flux is another great release from the long established band.
