Domkraft – Self Titled (10th Anniversary Expanded Edition)
The heavy psychedelic doom trio Domkraft are a remarkable band. This ten year anniversary edition of their debut EP comes at you remastered and with two new unreleased tracks. The band consists of Martin Wegeland on bass and vocals, Martin Widholm on guitars, and Anders Dahlgren on drums. With four full length albums, two EPs, and a live record, Domkraft have been on the tear since their inception, over a decade ago now. The Swedes create and perform repetition style doom better than anyone in the genre, in my opinion. I became intrigued with the band a few years ago before 2023’s Sonic Moons. I was looking for something new at the time and Sweden always delivers on the quality of the music and the bands themselves. I remember checking out Flood, Slow Fidelity, and Seeds. I really liked the heavy Domkraft sound and the repetitive riffs get stuck in your soul. Somehow I missed this Self Titled masterpiece first time around but it’s really connecting with me now.
Domkraft are the real deal and I was lucky and fortunate enough to see them play live last year. The show review is here. That particular live experience and atmosphere was gripping and amazing to be a part of and witness. So as I dive head first into the origin tracks of one the most captivating heavy psych doom bands ever, I am once again, blown away. These Nordic doomsters are magnificent! This Self Titled anniversary edition is massive on a few different levels. As I hear these crushing and monstrous tracks cranking in my eardrums, I can appreciate Domkraft more as pioneers for the genre of heavy, circular doom sludge. Expanded to six mega-songs, the record clocks in at forty seven minutes total. The excellent Magnetic Eye Records released this album on June 27th 2025.
Starting things off is the epic ten minute masterpiece called “Concrete Waves”. The song is a mastodon of heavy crushing riffs that will warp your mind in its intoxicating repetition. The shouty vocals work majestically with the psychedelic beat down of riffs and tones. The mesmerizing sounds of Domkraft are most striking in “Horses Horses” and the repeating monster of “Invaders”. The spastic jamming is intense on these tracks and when “Treenan” begins the mood shifts back down. The slow doom builds up nicely into haunting and repeating riffage. The power of the hypnotic flow of the music is so intense and appealing. The remastered versions of the original four song EP sounds incredible.
The band didn’t stop there. Two unreleased new tracks are included as a grandiose bonus. The first new song is called “Spiral Noises”. It’s a very introspective track that drifts the style slightly into more heavy psych and mountainous demolishing doom. The spoken vocals of Wegeland are progressive assets that the band has incorporated. To further advance their music, Domkraft is not slowing down after 2023’s monumental Sonic Moons (review here) album. In fact, Sonic Moons was in my top 10 of 2023, and the band’s progressive sound shift was a huge step for them to grow as a group. The closing song called “The Bane” is so goliath and expansive. If this song is an indicator of what the Domkraft sound is morphing into then we are about to be leveled. This colossal closer is the song of the apocalypse and the next Domkraft album might just be the best one yet.
