Earl Of Hell – Self Titled

Earl Of Hell is a stoner rock band from Edinburgh, UK. The five-piece features Eric Brock on lead vocals, Lewis Inglis on guitar & backing vocals, Dan Mitchell on guitar, Dean Gordon on bass, and Ryan Wilson on drums. Their debut EP entitled Get Smoked, was released in 2022. The Scottish quintet just released their debut full length Self Titled album on April 25th 2025. It contains nine tracks in thirty six minutes and is available on Copper Feast Records.

After a brief sample intro called “Satan Is Real”, Earl Of Hell explode right into “The Infernal Dream”. It’s a fantastic opening track that showcases many magnificent facets of the band. The heavy guitar chugging riffs and harmonies are met with dual singing vocals. The band has a great blend of musical styles in their repertoire. I hear traditional heavy metal, stoner, desert rock, and grunge in this song. The guitar harmonies and vocal melodies are great. The song carries on a great flow of fluid guitar riffing throughout. It has a rocking rhythm midway through that cranks, just before the guitar leads. Earl Of Hell has a heavy yet catchy sound that branches off into very interesting and compelling tones throughout this Self Titled record. “Impaler” kicks right in with a faster hardcore rhythm that has a punk rock vibrancy happening. The track has an old school thrash metal rage going on reminiscent of old Voivod, especially the chorus parts. It has an exuberant surge of energy that seems to have a lasting impact on the rest of the album.

“Brave New Age” is another killer song that encompasses a rocking groove. Eric Brock’s vocals sound great and jive well with the crunchy metallic rhythm. The scorching guitar leads and “wah” guitar flourishes are cool and the whole coarse of the song is smooth and tight. The fifth track, “Calling Is The Crow” is another colossal! Beginning with clean guitars, the song pounds in the heavy accents before ripping into a raging riff. Harmonized guitar and excellent vocals makes way and drives the song forward. The chorus has a catchy melody that resonates and some interesting audio psychedelic elements going on too. “My Twisted Mind” starts with a brooding tone that echoes into a classic stoner rock groove akin to Kyuss or The Big Black era Orange Goblin. The song merges in classic metal and hard driving riff rock to perfection and delivers another great track.

“Macabra Cadabra” continues the plethora of excellent riff riding tunes. The rhythm has a bouncy animation feel and energy that transcends into intense riffing and noise rocking segments. The robustness of the music combined with a powerful vocal delivery equals an exceptional combination of musical vivaciousness. The band really makes best use for having five members. Each instrument has its place and function and effectively enhances each song completely. “Waiting To Die” is another huge song, in terms of sound and quality. It has an alternative grunge rock vibe streaming through with sprinkles of heavy psych and atmospheric effects. The vocals are on point with their hook-driven execution and resilience. It seems like the music gets more elaborate and involved as this album plays on. It was also mixed and mastered by the legendary Alain Johannes, which I’m guessing had a big impact on the outcome of this recording.

The ninth and final cut on this album is called “Bloodlines”. It’s the longest track on the record, clocking in at just over seven minutes. It has a nice powerful build up that floats into the melodic heavy metal riffs beautifully. The song captures a heavy fullness of rock fueled rhythms and great vocals. It transforms just before the four minute point into a faster raw punk rhythm that correlates into some exciting guitar leads. Earl Of Hell blends in some hardcore tones and vocals with background vocal harmonies too. An interesting and excellent combination that exemplifies the diversity of sounds that this band brings. Definitely an ambitious and amazing song to finish off the album with. This record as a whole, is incredible! The more I listen to Earl Of Hell, the better I like them. This is yet another high quality debut full length album that deserves a lot of praise and recognition.
