Elepharmers – Western Wilderness
Elepharmers is a three-piece stoner rock band from Cagliari, Italy. Formed at the end of 2009, the band have released four albums including: 2013’s Weird Tales From The Third Planet, 2016’s Erebus, 2019’s Lords of Galaxia, and their latest, 2025’s Western Wilderness. The band consists of Guido “El Chino” Solinas on vocals, bass, and rhythm guitar, Angrea “Fex” Cadeddu on lead and rhythm guitars, and Maurizio Mura on drums. Western Wilderness was released on October 25th on Electric Valley Records. It contains nine tracks at forty one minutes long.
The classic stoner rock vibes are in full effect with thick and fuzzy tones and powerful and cosmic vocals. Lead off track “The Underworld” bulldozers down the desert rock highway with blazing riffs and melodies. “The Call Of The Wild” has a nice and bouncy riff rocking appeal, with some old school heavy metal mixed in. They layer in some keys and plow forward with the rhythm.
The third track called “Arcuentu” mellows down the tempo and delivers an ethereal and interesting sound. It has a floating essence and chilled out vibe with the guitar riffing and strumming. The vocals are high register and spacy, adding such a dynamic component to the Elepharmer’s sound. They are really capable of sending you on a sonic trip into another dimension. The fuzz drenched guitar sound and booming drums are appealing on tracks like “Burning The Nest” and “Dung Beetle”. Western Wilderness is an excellent album that gets better with each listen. They definitely have a familiar sound but execute it with such energy and depth. Riff rocking “Drifter” has a Swedish stoner rock presence and the catchy “Blind” is terrific also. I hear elements of classic seventies rock and early heavy metal which is always a plus in my mind.
“Towers Of Silence” starts off mellow and musical. The clean guitars are enhanced with blues-style leads and rhythmic drumming. The song dazzles with melody and has a beautiful flow throughout. There is an unmistakable Kyuss connection with the Elepharmers tone and desert rock riffage. The band does incorporate some heavy and devastating doom mixed perfectly with some synthesized rock that is showcased on the closer, “Genna Serapis”. This instrumental finisher has a strong arrangement of varied tones that the band addresses. On the surface, the Elepharmers are not reinventing the wheel with their style. However, they deliver a very engaging and dynamic sonic experience that it’s easy to want to keep listening to what they are dishing out.
Western Wilderness is an excellent record! The band manages to inject us with the nostalgic desert rock sound but with enough audio allure to keep it original and engaging. These nine tracks are created by a band that is comfortable and committed to what they craft. The music has an enticing draw that will rope you right in once the tones are exposed. Elepharmers are a worthy addition to the Italian stoner rock scene. This album is the crème de la crème in 90’s influenced desert rock and it’s very refreshing hearing what this trio is doing sonically. Producing absolutely crushing riffs, soaring leads, thunderous rhythms, and cosmic vocals, Elepharmers are a band to keep an eye on. Unknowingly, they could very well become your new favorite band.
