Gran Moreno – El Sol

Gran Moreno is a two-piece band from Austin, Texas. They play a blend of heavy psychedelic riff rock with a Spanish and progressive groove. The band consists of brothers Ricardo Rodríguez and Christian Rodríguez. They recently released their official debut album called El Sol, on January 16th 2026. It contains seven tracks at thirty two minutes long.

The first song is called “Las Montañas” and it’s fantastic! Starting off with clean guitars, the song kicks into a nice fuzzy groove of heavy rock. The vocals are sung in Spanish and are a little eccentric but cool. The music is raging along with tightness and heavy grooves. The riffs are dynamic with progressive flares sparking up the song. The song flows right into “Aztlan” with the same rocking ferocity. The drumming is amazing and tight allowing the guitars to do whatever they want. It’s quite amazing that Gran Moreno are producing such dense sounds with only two guys. It’s pretty mind blowing to think about but they totally kill it with their music!

The third track called “Huracán” starts off mellow and is an emotional rock experience. The fuzzy tones are beautiful touches for the varied tracks. The end sequence is magnificent with hard layers of rock infused with heavy psych and jazz. “Temple of Fire” is probably the most obvious to being a hit single and making Gran Moreno a household name. The vocals are sung in English and gel good with the dynamic rock and crushing melodies. There is heavy use of the piano and keys where the song breaks right into it. “La Mentira” strikes next and has a driving tone carrying along hard rocking grooves.

The sixth track is called “OAXACA / Please Don’t Cry” and it begins with lush, tribal percussion and clean strummed guitars, with smooth Spanish vocals. The horn section on this track is especially engaging. Gran Moreno are super talented and together create such atmospheric and beautiful music, no matter of the style. The final song on El Sol is entitled “HIKURI”. It begins with clean strumming guitars and vocals and then the drums join with some snare taps. Right after a couple of measures, the song erupts into a colossal doom riff. “HIKURI” has some abrupt changes from acoustic to heavy riff rock. The brothers have a jamming adventure in their songs but never going out there too far. I especially love how the last song concludes and caps off such an excellent debut record.
