Indica Blues – Universal Heat Death
Indica Blues is a stoner rock band from Oxford, United Kingdom. Forging elements of desert rock, heavy psych, blues, and doom, the band formed in 2014. They consist of Tom Pilsworth on guitar and vocals, Lewis Batten on guitar, Andrew Haines-Villalta on bass, and Rich Walker on drums. Their recordings include two four song EPs, 2014’s Towers Rising and 2016’s Ruins on the Shore. They released three full length albums including, 2018’s Hymns for a Dying Realm, 2021’s We Are Doomed, and their latest, 2026’s Universal Heat Death. Universal Heat Death contains seven tracks and is around thirty seven minutes long. It was released on January 30th on Majestic Mountain Records.
Being my first time listening to Indica Blues, I immediately got locked into their sound with the heavy down-tuned guitar riffs and the melodious vocal delivery. The title track “Universal Heat Death” takes over the sound waves as a good and solid opener to a great sounding recording. The dense riffs and blues-laden guitar work flows nicely with the great vocals. The second track called “The Raven” is a catchy and fuzzy adventure into the heavy doom and blues. The main riff gets things moving and it is a great straight forward rocker which accompanies the lead off track. Electrifying leads and sludge filled riffing carries the song along for a nice touch of desert rocking goodness.
The third track is an instrumental called “Bloodsands pt.1”. It begins with an enchanted bass line that is layered with some excellent clean guitar. It has a nice transition from light to heavy and waves along a smooth and melodious flow throughout. The rhythms are catchy and sometimes mellow in between the fuzzed-out heaviness. It has great rolling bass accentuations with psychedelic twists of wavering guitar tones. The song channels a well balanced sonic cascade of emotive rhythms and ethereal sounds. “The Slow Descent Into Hell” is a two and a half minute straight forward drive into thrashy riffing down the cavernous streets of metal, with gang vocal shouts to boot.
The band really shines on the magnificent “Debt Ridden Blues”, an almost eight minute sonically crafted composition of psychedelic blues and doom. The reverberations in the music and vocals are mesmerizing throughout the song, creating a beautiful mix of stoner grooves drenched in heavy blues. It has a prodding rhythm enhanced by soulful leads and mournful singing. Indica Blues slides into the “Bloodsands pt 2” tune afterwards, exhibiting a primal blend of subtle hallucinatory melodies and crunchy distorted bliss.
The last track on Universal Heat Death is called “So Low”. It has a grungy tone and a stoner groove, constituting a catchy chorus of “my heart is so low, tonight”. The song has a bouncy vibrancy that then diverges into a slower doom rhythm. As the riff is playing out, drummer Rich Walker performs some crushing fills that fortifies the song into completion. Indica Blues is a band that has the experience and talent to really create a fantastic album. Universal Heat Death is chock full of fantastic riffs and melodies that illuminates my interest with every single listen.
