Insomniac – Om Moksha Ritam

Insomniac is a heavy psychedelic rock band from Atlanta, Georgia. The lineup consists of Juan Garcia on bass, Mike Morris on guitar and vocals, Van Bassman on vocals, Amos Rifkin on percussion and vocals, and Alex Avedissian on guitar. The band released their debut full length album called Om Moksha Ritam on Blues Funeral Recordings. The seven song record was released on September 1st 2025 and is about forty eight minutes long.

Insomniac are a heavily layered band with a lot of different tones igniting their sound. “Meditation” kicks in with eerie guitars and low frequency vocals. The song uplifts as the vocals begin to soar with power and emotion. The record has sprinklings of heavy psych, hard rock, eclectic tones, mixed with doom. Insomniac doesn’t strike with super fuzzy riffs but rather with atmospheric dirges of heaviness. The expansive music is a head trip. “Meditation” is an arrangement that runs just over seven minutes with spacey swirls and spoken vocals that give the song a dark aura while staying melodious in sound.

“Mountain” is an excellent song! The heavy doom-laden track is more striking than the opener. It’s more direct and sheds musical dynamics and orchestrated fragments into the mix. It has a strong progressive sound and rocks ahead with fearless conviction. “Snow & Ice” is a dense composition that really takes the music on a journey. The subtle and mellow opening of the guitars are alluring. The drums suddenly crank up to gonzo playing but the music stays light. It’s a great effect to really push the music into something original and captivating. “Snow & Ice” is a multi-textured song that has a lot of interesting elements happening sonically.

The next two tracks “Forest” and “Sea” are equally impressive numbers that both have a great sound and structure. Insomniac has a melancholy vibe to some of their music that resonates deeply at times, as they are able to hypnotize the listener with their sound. They create an expansive and subtle approach to heavy. “Desert” is another excellent song full of melody and audio brilliance. The smooth vocal design really enhances these songs that much more. The density and layers of sound that is captured on Om Moksha Ritam is quite remarkable.

The final track on the album is called “Awakening”. It’s a beautiful and cosmic voyage through heavy rock with a heaping of melody. Insomniac electrifies things up a bit on this one and push the intensity out to the end. I really enjoy this debut and love albums that blossom into fully immersive musical passages. Om Moksha Ritam Is that type of record that has soul and sensation.

Unfortunately, tragedy has stricken the band just before the album release, when guitarist Mike Morris unexpectedly passed away. I have total respect for the band to continue on and share this creative endeavor with the world, despite such an untimely misfortune. There is definitely an emotional and awe-inspiring connection with these seven tracks from the band that radiates to the listener. When you approach these songs with the right mindset then the sonic brilliance is so clearly revealed.
