Oreyeon – The Grotesque Within
Oreyeon is a heavy psychedelic stoner doom band from La Spezia, Italy. The quartet formulates sounds from heavy metal and grunge, with a dark progressive twist of heavy riffs and enchanting melodies. Formed in 2014, Oreyeon features Richard Silvaggio on bass and vocals, Andrea Ricci on guitar, Matteo Signanini on guitar, and Pietro Virgilio on drums. They have released four full length recordings and one Split, including: 2016’s Builders of Cosmos, 2019’s Ode To Oblivion, 2021’s Equations for the Useless, 2023’s Doom Session Vol.8 (Split with Lord Elephant), and their latest, 2026’s The Grotesque Within. They continued with Heavy Psych Sounds and released The Grotesque Within on February 13th 2026. It contains seven tracks at thirty six minutes long.
The Grotesque Within is my first experience with Oreyeon and I am very impressed with what I’m hearing. Not only does the recording sound great but the music and vocals are top notch too! The album has a dark theme connected to it as stated on Oreyeon’s Bandcamp page: “The Grotesque Within” is what we proudly call our first true self-produced album. Recorded in the winter of 2025 between Outside Inside Studio in Treviso and our own home studio, it marks a raw and uncompromising chapter in our sound. The record weaves a dense narrative inspired by the unsettling atmosphere found in the works of Thomas Ligotti — where reality constantly threatens to unravel, and horror seeps into the everyday. Much like Ligotti’s existential tales, The Grotesque Within doesn’t simply portray darkness — it observes how the absurd and the horrific have become indistinguishable from our modern reality.”
“Echoes Of Old Nightmares” begins with harmonic guitar parts that erupt into a colossal of fuzzy riffs. Big, heavy, and thick rhythms that strike with stoner ferocity. The music blends, dense metallic tones with dynamic guitar melodies, encapsulating an ethereal sound of crushing doom riffs. The high register and melodic vocals work their magic in the mix of the audio aggression. The second track, “Nothing But Impurities, Pt. 1” has a smooth vocal flow over a mountain of stoner grooves and melodies. Oreyeon are tight in their execution, exhibiting nice rolling bass lines, and devastating guitar riffs, with excellent solid drumming to bring it all together. The song crawls into “Nothing But Impurities, Pt 2”. With a haunting bass line and eerie guitar tones, the song has a dark Alice In Chains vibe wrapped around a blanket of doom.
The musical transitions are interesting and dynamic- leading into Interesting passages of musical madness. The title track “The Grotesque Within”, begins with the drums playing a measure of swing beats that kick into the dense, pile driving rhythms. This one has a grunge vibe with a haunting yet mid-paced tempo, carried along by the hypnotic vocals. Midway through the song, Oreyeon switch gears and deliver a keyboard laced psychedelic bridge that keeps the song so engaging and vibrant. It sounds very orchestrated at times and brings out another side to the band’s already varied sound.
“Something Over There” is another killer track that flows from one heavy riff to the next in beautiful structure, piecing in chuggy accents and rhythms. The vocals are calming and powerful when necessary and are an excellent complement to the compelling music. Oreyeon has the experience and talent to really push their music into different levels of heavy. “I’m Your Mistake” is a straightforward, but elaborate display of musical brilliance expressed by the band. The songwriting is very deep with these seven tracks and each of them tells a compelling story.
The final track is an atmospheric adventure into the depths of hard driven doom. Entitled, “Dead Puppet Eyes”, it sludges along with fuzz and harmonies. The vocals are soothing again, making the cluster of riffs sound more prominent and deafening. The trance-like ambience of Oreyeon’s sound affects the listener like a drug. The music has the ability to take you to places that your mind is not accustomed to going but it makes you feel whole once you get there. The Grotesque Within is another album that requires many listens to fully understand and appreciate. After many spins, I am still uncovering new sounds that didn’t compute beforehand. I need more hours in my day to fully immerse myself with a band like Oreyeon, because there is so much to discover with this one album alone.
