Psalm – In Darkness.. Have Mercy EP
Psalm is a heavy rocking doom metal band from Los Vegas, Nevada. Formed in 2020, during the pandemic, the band has released their debut EP entitled Blessed Are The Cursed in 2021. The trio consists of Jon Torres on vocals and bass, Ian Henneforth on drums, and Carlos Martinez on guitar. Their latest EP, called In Darkness… Have Mercy was released on July 16th 2025. It contains four tracks just under twenty minutes.
The riffs are monolithic and the leads are scorching, Psalm delivers a crushing performance of classic doom songs. The heavy and driving riff of “Misery” counters with a head banging rhythm following suit. The vocals are in the register of power metal but not as high pitched. They work great for the menacing riffs and melodies. The songs really percolate and grow into a massive structure of devastating sounds. “Messiah” has a mellow intro with a monstrous bass tone and excellent clean vocals to back it. The music is a slow grower of epic proportions. The thrashy rhythms are something else too, which I really enjoy. Everything works well and sounds completely obliterating.
The third song called “Value Through Suffering” is pretty brutal. It has a sludge heavy riff that hammers with a metallic aggression. The melody is grandiose and Psalm is dialed in on their sound and sonic structure. The final track is a revamped version of the 2021 release “Blessed Are The Cursed”. It sounds awesome and completely demolishing! The riffs are diabolical and massive, crushing in every aspect. I wasn’t expecting this EP to be so amazing, to be honest. Psalm has a spark of old school doom and metal that vibes flawlessly with their own signature sound. In Darkness… Have Mercy could be in the conversation for favorite EP of the year. However, there have been many exceptional ones thus far that are all incredible and worthy of mentioning. I am really looking forward to hearing what Psalm will bring in the future with a full length album. If these four tracks are any indication of what’s to come, then I am eagerly awaiting to hear more.
