RED EYE – III

RED EYE is heavy doom metal/ psych rock power trio from Málaga, Spain. The band consists of Pablo Terol Rosado on drums, percussion, synths, and vocals, Antonio Pérez Muriel on bass and synths, and Antonio Campos del Pino on guitar and vocals. The band formed in 2016, initially as a quartet, and released 2019’s Tales from the Days of Yore and 2022’s The Cycle. They just recently reemerged as a three piece and released their third album, aptly titled III, on February 28th 2025, on Discos Macarras Records. It contains eight tracks in forty three minutes.

The two minute intro track “Ad Infinitum” begins the album with a wave of spacey psychedelic synth, that fades right into “Sagittarius A*”. Starting with a monstrous distorted bass riff, the song is a mountain of heavy doom. The devastating plodding rhythm is met with angry vocals and thunderous drumming. RED EYE has a punishing sound that steamrolls over anything in its path. The third track “See Yourself” has a heavy bulldozing sound with the addition of cleaner vocals. This simple adjustment makes a big difference in the audio dynamics that the band produces. The colossal riffs are in and of themselves a human wrecking ball of destruction. The vocals carry out a haunting allure that augments the overall sound with a ravaging effect.

“No Morning After” begins with a sample about UFO’s and erupts into a nasty bass riff. The mammoth fuzzy tones encapsulates the song and features dual clean vocals. The song branches out into more shouting on the chorus parts but returns to the glorious binary singing. Just before the four minute mark, the song transcends with a cool wah bass effect, accentuated by some synthesized reverberations. It then explodes right back into the massive doom menacing while utilizing heavy and spacy psych rhythms. RED EYE will absolutely punish the listener with their enormous fuzz-laced riffage. “Beyond” has a heavy rocking groove flowing on this track. The matching clean vocals return on this one and the song expresses a more upbeat tempo and vibe. The heavy psych is present while the band explores some different melodies on this song altogether. It has some interesting musical dynamics utilizing a horn section just before the two minute ending sequence. The new age synth is met with a heavy chugging of start stop riffing and prog-ish twists and sounds. It has an atmospheric aura and sounds very cool and cathartic.

The sixth track “Stardust” is a purifying cleansing of space rocking eminence. RED EYE combines the clean and harsher vocal styles elegantly on all of their songs and this one is no exception. The music boasts a mid tempo flowing of rocking fury. The bass sound is more trebly on this track and executes precisely with the crunchy riffing of the guitars. The ending sequence is a thrashing array of metal and heavy psych sounds. “Nebula” storms through next with a heavy beat down of distorted grooves and viscous melodies. The crunchiness of the guitars is fantastic and the overall production of III is superb. The weighty drums matched with the fuzzy tones of the guitar and bass are really well balanced. “Nebula” shifts mid way through the song with a funky bass line and swirls of psychedelic magic produced by the guitars. The rock solid percussion keeps the drive of the song alive and the band crushes back into the heavy distorted groove with such finesse. Most of the eight tracks fall between the five to seven minute range. This gives RED EYE ample amounts of time to build up and deliver a walloping performance of psychedelic doom and riff rocking frenzy.

The final cut on III is called “The Nine Billion Names of God”. It begins with clean guitars and vocals as the simple and heavy drums command the lead. The distortion pedals kick on in between the verses, creating a nice transition of light to heavy rhythms. The music explores atmospheric harmonies and sounds with the vocals staying intoned to the music mostly. However, towards the end of the track, the intensity builds up musically and vocally. The sludge riffs re-appear along with the more aggressive shouting. The band never stays centered to one tonality and pushes the envelope and volume to further enhance each musical passage. I am really pleased with how captivating this band sounds and not overly doing one thing. They brilliantly showcase a wide variety of heavy doom and psychedelic stoner rock. I am very impressed and enthralled with this three piece band from Spain. For this being my first exposure to RED EYE, I am pretty much blown away with how great it all sounds.
