Sheev – Ate’s Alchemist

Sheev is a heavy groove-laden/ progressive stoner rock band from Berlin, Germany. The lineup consists of Nitzan on guitar and vocals, Phil on drums, Joshan on bass, and Songwut on guitar. They released an EP in 2019 called HORSEMOUTH and their debut, 2021’s Mind Conductor. The band has signed to Ripple Music and just released their sophomore second full length entitled Ate’s Alchemist. It came out on July 11th 2025 and contains eight tracks in fifty minutes.

Sheev has an unforgettable crushing sound that resides somewhere between old school heavy metal and groovy progressive rock. The heavy chugging guitars have a Meshuggah/ Helmet vibe at times and then expand into a Voivod / Tool style of prog. The musicianship is amazing but I’m really digging the lead bass lines from Joshan on the crushing opening “Martef”, after the sampled intro called “The Alchemist”. Sheev has varied vocals that are mostly clean but sound really good and fitting, courtesy of Nitzan.  Songs like “Kimg Mustard II” and “Elephant Trunk” are flat out amazing and constitutes excellent song crafting skills. The drums from Phil are jazz-like and hammering and commands the show. I hear King Crimson influences in some of these tracks too. The tones are heavy and syncopated with nice melodic vocals to coalesce with the music.

The fifth track “Henry” is a magnificent rocker! The guitars are dripping with fuzz as the bass is jamming away with cool textures of low end leads. The start stop chugging riffs are mixed with the progy rhythms and are done with just the right feel and execution. Sheev has nailed that skill with bangers like “Cul De Sac” and “Tüdelüt”. The vocals have a deep draw about them that erupts into melodies. There are a lot of in depth musical elements that are presented on Ate’s Alchemist. The heavy groove structure is so appealing to me and the band never over does any one style of sound. Like most exceptional recordings, this one requires multiple listens because it gets better and better each time.

The final track, called “Sabress” is another ass kicker! Armed with twisted riffing and off-kiltered percussion, Sheev hypnotizes the listener to get lost in their melodies and awoken by the bulldozing riffage. The hype was strong with this band and release, and rightfully so, they kill it! I hear some Keelhaul style rhythms also which is another great example of why I’m digging this album so much. Sheev layer some beautiful keyboards in the background which further enhances their devastating sound. All in all, I really enjoy Sheev a lot! Ate’s Alchemist is a high caliber album that I will be listening to throughout the rest of the year.
