Spaceslug – Lemanis (2024 Remaster)

Spaceslug is a three-piece cosmic stoner doom band from Wroclaw, Poland. Consisting of Bartosz Janik on guitars and vocals, Jan Rutka on bass and vocals, and Kamil Ziółkowski on drums and vocals, the band formed in 2015. Their album releases includes 2016’s Lemanis, 2017’s Time Travel Dilemma, 2017’s Mountains & Reminiscence, 2018’s Eye The Tide, 2019’s Reign Of The Orion, 2020’s Leftovers EP, 2021’s Memorial, and 2024’s Out Of Water. They were also featured on a couple of compilations too. Last year, the band remastered their landmark debut album Lemanis with three bonus tracks in addition to the original seven songs. It was released on May 3rd 2024 on Electric Witch Mountain Recordings. It includes a total of ten tracks just over an hour long.

The first track, “Proton Lander” sets the tone for the seven monumental songs that make up Lemanis. Spaceslug is a name that I have seen many times in the past but for whatever reason, escaped my ears from actually hearing them. Until just recently, the band’s sound was a complete mystery to me and I wasn’t sure exactly what kind of music they were playing. I ended up deep diving into the discography, but I kept returning to this album. Each song is a cosmic journey and “Proton Lander” ebbs and flows through heavy fuzz-drenched rhythms and a flowing stream of psychedelic head tripping. The vocals are pretty chilled out and buried a little in the mix, allowing the music to fully emerge and communicate with the listener.

“Hypermountain” is another rager! Smooth and steady build ups, erupting into a colossal riff canyon. The heaviness is massive and accentuated with ethereal guitar leads with crushing rhythms. The third track is appropriately titled “Supermassive” and it’s a devastating tidal wave of doom and stoner metal. The bulldozing riffs and mesmerizing tones are perfectly matched together enveloping a very dynamic and expansive sound. Spaceslug has such menacing music and sometimes they mess with the tempo. On the ending of “Supermassive”, they speed up and the slow down that devastating Sabbath riff. It definitely adds an element of savagery to an already brutal rhythm structure.

The more I listen to Spaceslug, the better it gets, especially Lemanis. This re-mastered version sounds incredible and being over nine years old, the music is interesting and timeless. Sometimes nothing feels better than allowing a song like “Galactelion” to freely expand space in my mind, as I drift intently into a mental musical vortex. The transitions of light to heavy and the atmospheric blankets of samples and heavy psych are amazing. “Grand Orbiter” is another terrific song that has a heavy doom and haunting essence to the psychedelic space rock. The soporific trance of the vocals and gliding rhythms are extremely meditative if you allow yourself to get lost in it. Every track on this album has that same effect, honestly.

“Quintessence” is a minute and a half of strumming clean guitars in an airy and tranquil interlude that proceeds the monumental title track, “Lemanis”. The closure to the original album is an awesome instrumental bomb of riffalicious heavy grooves and atmospheric turbulence. I can’t say enough good things about this song or the record as a whole! I can now understand the iconic status of Lemanis because it’s an absolutely captivating listen.  The three bonus tracks on this release are: “Proton Lander 2020” and two live versions of “Hypermountain” and “Supermassive”. Truthfully, the first original seven are the perfect amount but these bonuses are a great addition too.

Finally, what got me to check out Spaceslug ultimately was Sean from the Heavy Underground Farm Report mentioned them as a top five important band in our scene right now. Shortly afterwards, John Gist announced Spaceslug as a returning act for The Planet Desert Rock Weekend Festival, that I will be attending this coming year in Las Vegas. I have completely immersed myself with their music, especially this masterpiece, Lemanis. I am super excited that I get to hear these tracks performed live and witness the true essence and beauty of these songs, fully encapsulated into my heart and soul. This is the kind of music that can truly change a person and my transformation is undeniable and underway as I transcend deeper into the realm of Spaceslug
