TFNRSH – Book Of Circles

TFNRSH is an instrumental psychedelic/ progressive rock band from Tübingen, Germany. Book Of Circles is their latest album, set to be released on January 17th 2025. I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced digital copy from Thomas at Broken Music. The current lineup of TFNRSH is Sasan Bahreini on guitars and synths, Julius Watzl on drums, and Stefan Wettengl on bass and synths. The band has released a prior album, 2023’s Tiefenrausch.

The first song “Zemestan” opens the album with a fade in sequence of guitar, synths, and an atmospheric layering. The bass and hi-hat enter next with the kick drum soon following. The music all diverges together in a nice build up of progressive jamming. The sound is a collaboration of heavy rock with new age elements blended in. “Zemestan” modulates its sound throughout the song and keeps it hard driving throughout. The transitions are fluid and ebb and flow throughout the eleven minute track. “WRZL” kicks in next with a hard rocking rhythm and some spacy synth sounds too. The song quickly shifts into a clean guitar essence with a nice warm bass sound and cool percussive drumming. The flange guitar effect appears and the song then reconstructs into soft measures followed by another smooth build up into riffy-er territory. TFNRSH’s music is in the same wheelhouse of bands like My Sleeping Karma and Monkey3.

“Zorn” starts with psych synthesized keyboards and a spoken passage in German. The drums enter the song with some percussive accents with a halo of synth on top. The tribal style drumming carries on with the spoken German until about the four a half minute mark. The music pauses as the guitar begins the next transition of the song. From there, the sound is a revolutionized flow of jamming for the duration. Flourishes of guitar leads are added in spots towards the end and the music finishes in grand fashion. The final track “Ammoglyd” begins with a thunderstorm of rain with slow and melodic guitar playing. The song stays fairly subdued throughout its seven plus minute runtime and builds up slowly with the drums and bass emerging. It’s a beautiful song and a cool way to close out a very well done recording.

Book Of Circles should satisfy most heavy instrumental rock fans that like dynamic melodies and atmospheric harmony. TFNRSH does a great job blending hard rock riffing with ambient synthesizing. The music has a graceful flowing sound similar to newer band Aeternal Chambers and the pioneering 35007. Book Of Circles is a great addition to your collection for fans of the aforementioned artists.
