The Death Wheelers – The Ecstasy Of Möld
The Death Wheelers are a Canadian hard rocking instrumental band from Quebec City, Quebec. The group consists of founder Max “The Axe” Tremblay on bass and all instruments in the studio, Hugo ‘Red Beard’ Bertacchi on guitar, Sy ‘Wild Rye’ Tremblay on guitar, and Richard ‘The Bastard’ Turcotte on drums. Formed in 2015, they have released five EPs including: 2015’s The Death Wheelers, 2015’s Mötorpsycho, 2015’s Death Wheelers Theme, and 2015’s Mind-Blowing Trip!!!, and 2022’s Mondo Trasho. They also released four full length albums including: 2018’s I Tread On Your Grave, 2020’s Divine Filth, 2023’s Chaos and the Art of Motorcycle Madness, and their latest, 2025’s The Ecstasy Of Möld. The Ecstasy Of Möld was released on March 7th on RidingEasy Records and contains ten tracks at just over thirty minutes long.
The Death Wheelers are a wild and rambunctious joy ride of sleazy hard rocking riffs and break neck biker rhythms. Blending some obscure movie sampling with a raging fury of hard driven rock, the band are melting our faces with their sound. From the quick opening track of “Loud Pipes Take Lives” blazing into “Homicycle Maniacs”, The Death Wheelers have the fury of Motörhead-inspired rock pumping through their veins. “Hella Hammered” could be the definitive soundtrack of a Hell’s Angel type of biker gang. The music has uncompromising groove and flow that can shift between hardcore and heavy metal excursions, while always staying in the pocket of hard rock.
The use of accents and a fury of guitar leads really makes for an interesting and enjoyable listening experience. There are some prog and swing beat components in their music like on the song “Un Pneu Dans La Tombe – Aide Musicale À Mourir”. The band can really hammer out rhythmic grooves like no other. The title track “The Ecstasy Of Möld” showcases this notion and dazzles us with some slower melodies of clean guitars too.
The Death Wheelers do an amazing job at keeping their sound so dynamic and interesting. You never know where the riffs will go from one note to the next. “Blood, Bikes and Barbiturates” and “Bleu Nuit (Les Plaisirs De La Chair)” captures a sonic adventure of fuzz rocking grooves and jazz style decorations. I really enjoy what these guys are doing and the music has a great transitional flow throughout the whole record. Heavy riff rock with plenty of varied sounds mixed in. Songs like “Way Of The Road” and “The Heretic Rites Of Count Choppula” carry a pretty simple and straightforward formula to the song structures, but utilize elements of prog, doom, thrash, jazz, and heavy psych. There’s such an amazing elegance about these tracks that really resonate with me. The music steers you along for a ride through many sonic terrains and never takes the foot off the pedal or the hand off the wheel.
By the time the final track called “Get Laid…To Rest” fades in, the damage is already reckoned. The Death Wheelers are a tight sounding menace of musical attitude with striking harmony and melodies tucked away inside. This final track unleashes the talents and expressions of this fine-tuned band. Where certain songs would hint at these qualities, this song capitalizes on it.
The Ecstasy Of Möld is a fantastic hard rocking instrumental album that I have revisited many times. The music really does travel through many passages of heavy rock, stoner, punk, and metal, giving us a full entree of delicious tones and melodies. The Death Wheelers have been a great discovery of instrumental riff rock that makes good use of intro-type samples. This album is one of the finest singer-less releases that I have encountered this year.
