Witchrider – MetaMorph EP
The Austrian heavy rock quartet Witchrider are back with six new tracks. They have previously released their 2013 Self Titled EP, 2014’s Unmountable Stairs, 2014’s The Return Of The Fuzzdplit, Vol. 1 (with Truckfighters), 2020’s Electrical Storm, and now their latest, 2025’s MetaMorph EP. The band consists of Daniel Dorninger on vocals and guitar, Michael Hirschmugl on bass, Bernhard Weigl on guitar, and Bernhard Sorger on drums. MetaMorph was released on Fuzzorama Records on August 15th 2025, and contains six songs topping off at twenty five minutes.
Witchrider is a very progressive band, in which their sound is always expanding into something bigger and more dynamic. I always loved their desert rock aura with the early releases and have been on board for the changes into more varied sonic territory. This EP strikes me as the most focused and engaged release from the band and a collection of some amazing songs. “Used To Be A King” strums a very catchy and ear wormy opener. It has a powerful mix of Truckfighters and Queens Of The Stone Age musically and vocally. It sounds amazing nonetheless! The perfect blend of heavy fuzz and melody is what Witchrider is all about. The catchy and radio friendly sound is quite appealing. This album covers a lot of ground with heavy hitters like “Sound Of The Presidents” and “Hold My Mind” rocking with vigilance and precision. The vocals remind me of Pedar from Lowrider when he was doing the I Are Droid project. The contrast of high to low reminds me of that vibe. It sounds great with how they piece it with the heavy riff rocking music.
“Safe To Say” is a an ode to QOTSA, with the Josh Homme crooning vocals and all. It’s an excellent song either way and Witchrider has adopted this sound so naturally and really made it their own. MetaMorph is a collection of ass kicking songs all making a statement. “Wake Me Up” has a smooth and groovy vibe happening in a more mellow tone. The sixth and final track is called “Alive” and it’s amazing. The acoustic guitars and cosmic swirls of psych are the perfect backdrop for the vocals to soar with emotion and drive. The tribal vibes are mesmerizing too and leaves the listener hungry for more. Witchrider understands the power of an effective EP. These six songs give you a broad sense of the capability and elite structure in which this band exemplifies.
MetaMorph is an immense and massive sounding recording that fits nicely on Fuzzorama Records, partners from the very beginning. Witchrider are on the verge of becoming the next major breakout band from the heavy underground rock scene, based on the collection of gems that they have right here.
