Monolord – Neverending

Monolord is a doom metal trio from Gothenburg, Sweden. Active since 2013, the band features Thomas V. Jäger on guitar, and vocals, Esben Willems on drums, and Mika Häkki on bass. They have put out six full length releases including: 2014’s Empress Rising, 2015’s Vænir, 2017’s Rust, 2019’s No Comfort, 2021’s Your Time to Shine, and 2026’s Neverending. They also released a slew of EPs, singles, etc. Neverending was released on May 29th 2026 on Relapse Records. It contains eight tracks at forty three minutes long.

“Iodine” starts off the recording with some clean guitar strumming cascading into a heavy wall of doom. Fuzzy bass tones, ethereal guitars, thundering percussion, and soaring vocals all join to form the musical monologue, resulting in Neverending. “Iodine” signifies the triumph return of Monolord, nearly five years since their last full length. “You Bastard” merges in the heavy doom rhythms with the psychedelic leanings that have been brewing since the beginning. “Inside A Collider” is an eight minute monster that highlights the slow and eerie sounds of doom with a punishing execution.

“Crystal Bridge” is a crushing track! Bulldozing riffs and heavy chugging guitars are contrasted with soothing and melodic vocals. The sludgy and metallic rhythms adjoin nicely with the more softer and atmospheric tones. “Oozing Wounds” is another killer track! Beautifully executed transitions of heavy to light rhythms and an airy psychedelic jam session midway through. Monolord are one of the most striking and interesting doom bands in the heavy underground music scene today. The music is fluid throughout Neverending with songs like “The Masque” and “Invisible” solidifying the second half of the recording.

The eighth and final track is called “It’s Neverending”. It features brutal death metal style vocals from Jörgen Sandström (who played bass in Entombed and bass, guitar, and vocals in Grave). He provides the diabolical lead vocals, with Thomas V. Jäger filtering in some clean vocals in the middle and the end of the track. It’s quite the massive composition to end with. Monolord are back with an outstanding new album that should satisfy older fans and gain a bunch of new ones too.
