Red Desert – Self Titled

Red Desert is a four-piece stoner rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Formed in 2004, they have released 2008’s 18 Wheels, 2012’s Damned by Fate, 2016’s Second Coming of Heavy: Chapter Two (Split with Supervoid), 2021’s Horizon EP,  and their latest, 2026’s Self Titled. The band consists of Shawn Stende on guitar and vocals, Paul Teeter on bass and vocals, Jeff Kluegel on guitar, and Dave Dancho on drums. The Self Titled was released on May 16th 2026 and contains six tracks at thirty one minutes long.

I remember hearing Red Desert a few years ago and really digging their style of classic stoner rock. Big and heavy rhythms with fuzzed-out stoner grooves, the band has a full on dynamic sound! It has been over five years since their last recording and I was surprised to see this album suddenly show up. I didn’t see any promotions for it and to be honest, I wasn’t even sure that the band was still active. I am very pleased to announce that Red Desert is back and still kicking ass!

The first song “Fallen” has an undeniable groove and driving rhythm that sinks its hooks right into you. The fuzzy flow is directed with the bass and vocals commanding the verses, setting up the riffalicious retaliation. There’s a simplicity in the band’s execution that makes these songs sound so satisfying and vital. The midpoint groove shuffle is proof of their conviction. Red Desert has a classic stoner rock tone with no bells or whistles, just amplified worship of fuzzy hard rock. “Day Late Dollar Short” has a punchy groove that is hard to stay still when listening to. The vocals are great and have a pleasantry about the way they sound that works well with the music. It’s great to hear a band like Red Desert, that still has that traditional desert rock flare that ignites these tracks into a burning audio sensation.

The third track “Searching” is a banger! The heavy kick drum and hi-hat begin the song as the fuzzy guitar riff commences. The song is dense with accents, allowing the vocals to shine, to begin the verse. The music connects nicely as the rhythm slides along with the groove and predicated flow. “New Dawn” is another powerful number that connects all the dots for expressing high octane, motor ready, unfiltered, and unapologetically traditional stoner rock. No fancy gadgets or effects, just riff raging rock with infectious melodies, and ample amounts of fuzz.

“BigTop” is another heavy hitter! Utilizing huge, soaring riffs with powerful vocals and melodies, Red Desert are making a great statement with this rocking record. “Unkind Man” is the sixth and final track. Like a storm rolling through the dry and barren hot sands, Red Desert are not compromising their sound for anyone. This is a seasoned band that has been grinding out the fuzz longer than a lot of bands have figured out how to plug in their guitars. Red Desert have returned with more barn burning stoner rock for our ringing ears delight.
