Plaindrifter – Gestalt

Plaindrifter is a stoner rock/ heavy psych band from Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The trio formed in 2017 and have released 2019’s Discovery EP, 2021’s Echo Therapy, and their latest sophomore album, 2026’s Gestalt. The band consists of Marcel “Uwe” Kloß on vocals and drums, Nils Stecker on guitar, and André Tinibel on bass. Gestalt makes its Ripple Music debut and was released on June 19th 2026. It contains six tracks at thirty nine minutes long.

“Moth Murmuration” begins with clean guitars and a vibrant rhythm section. The music has an intoxicating flow and when the fuzzy guitars connect at the two minute mark, the song really soars. Marcel “Uwe” Kloß has a powerful voice that is somewhere between melodic and raspy. Plaindrifter has a progressive anchoring with these tracks, really exploring and connecting with atmospheric soundscapes. The elements are subtle but captivating with the band’s elegant psychedelic tones, washed in a hard repertoire of desert rock. The song drifts right into the second track called “Eternal Season”. The strong and emotive vocals blend nicely with the heavy, and sometimes intricate music. These first two songs gives the listener a great sense of what to expect with the band and their musical dynamics. Both tracks are seven minutes each, which allows ample time for an interesting and expansive sound.

The next track, “Hyborian Age” is another banger! It begins with the drums that elicit clean guitars, enthralling rhythms, and atmospheric textures. The vocals are smooth and dialed in perfectly with the music, as the song really takes the listener on a spellbinding journey. The band’s ability to build up and expand each section of the song into an orderly and engaging composition is remarkable. I’m amazed by Kloß’s ability to play the drums and sing simultaneously. His drumbeats are intricate and exploratory at times too and his voice sounds terrific also. “Respite” is the shortest track, just under two minutes, and is a musically dynamic instrumental interlude that sets you right up for the next one.

“In Anima” kicks right in and explores deeper into the cosmos of stoner rock. Heavy and slamming riffs with melodic elements passing through the guitars and vocals. Guitarist Nils Stecker performs some excellent leads throughout Gestalt, which are definitely worth noting. Midway through “In Anima”, the music transitions into a mind bending psychedelic jam that is somewhat mellow but adventurous too. Just after the five minute mark, guest vocalist Ryan Garney (from High Desert Queen) makes his entrance into the song. He adds a strong vocal push that enhances the track with a subtle touch,  that doesn’t sound abrupt or out of place. His vocal delivery is excellent and blends perfectly with Plaindriver’s sonic endeavors.

The sixth and final track on Gestalt is called “Debaser”. Being the longest track on the album at nine and a half minutes, it’s also the most ambitious, in my opinion. Musically speaking, Plaindrifter is an amazing talent and each song tells a great story. “Debaser” shifts flawlessly from heavy stoner grooves to ambient psych rock. Bassist André Tinibel provides busy and expressive bass lines that convey groove and sonic transcendence. Everything about Gestalt is enthralling! Had I spent more time with this record sooner, it would have surely ended up on my top ten favorites for the second quarter. There are so many cool tones and audio intricacies on this album that further immersion is needed. I am very excited to see Plaindrifter live for their very first trek on the U.S. soil this coming September. I anticipate that they will be amazing at this year’s Ripplefest Texas festival in 2026.
