Abrams – Loon
Abrams is a heavy rock band from Denver, Colorado, with mixed elements of post-hardcore, shoe gaze, grunge, and noise rock. The current lineup consists of Zach Amster on vocals and guitar, Taylor Iversen on bass and vocals ,Ryan DeWitt on drum, and Graham Zander on guitar. Abrams formed in 2013 and their debut EP entitled February came out in 2014. The band’s full length albums include: 2015’s Lust, Love, Loss, 2017’s Morning, 2020’s Modern Ways, 2022’s In The Dark, 2024’s Blue City, and their latest, 2026’s Loon. Loon was released on April 17th 2026 on Blues Funeral Recordings and contains ten tracks at thirty seven minutes long.
The first noticeable change on this album is the sheer intensity and energy that permeates from all ten tracks. Loom is a vibrant and aggressive mix of hardcore rage and progressive noise rock. I can’t help but think of Quicksand as an influence but there is so much raw emotions integrated into this sonically powerful new album. The live feel is definitely felt and expressed more on these songs, in which the band worked with the super talented Andrew Schneider this time around. They opted for a live sound vibe that would fully carry over to the stage and this has achieved that! Although, 2024’s Blue City (review here) sounded amazing with Converge’s Kurt Ballou handling the recording, Abrams wanted this one to be more raw and abrasive.
My introduction to Abrams was with Blue City. I prominently did a deep dive and listened to their earlier work and really enjoyed the band’s progression from the start. This band fits snugly between Throttlerod and Shun stylistically, but they have their own unique sound happening also. I love when I can’t quite figure out what the band is going for in their music and Abrams fits this notion. “Glass House” comes in hot and has a furry of progressive rock and thrashy rhythms hitting the sound waves. The song is a mixture of aggressive hardcore and progressive metal, with a blazing intensity! “White Walls” has those ethereal noise rocking leads with a protruding rhythm section. The vocals are powerful and expressive and work perfectly with the hammering riffs and double kick drum action. The band are not holding back on their creativity either, flavoring in some new sounds and nuances into their music.
The third track “Last Nail” has a heavy grunge sound that is vibrant and grooving. Zach Amster’s voice is strong and emotive and commands this song along nicely. The heavy riffs and melodic twists of guitar harmonies are captivating. The band never loses sight of the hooks and melodies even though their sound is more brutal. “Said & Done” expresses this raging melody with such flawless clarity and precision tightness. Abrams doesn’t hold back and “Waves” is a little less relentless but it cues in all the crunchy tones and fuzzed-out grooves with the same exuberant drive as the others.
One of the more locked in and catchy songs on Loon is “How Did I Lose My Mind?”. The song has a hypnotic flow that the bass and drums express on the verses. The vocals are terrific and the catchy chorus is greatly understated. The driving riffs swell perfectly with the melodies and makes for one of the most ear worm worthy songs on the record. “A State Of Mind” cranks right in with a stabbing of heavy fuzz with soothing and mesmerizing vocals. The eighth track “Home” is a banger! The crunchy guitar strumming with the vocals at the start, erupts into a riff canyon as everything joins in. The music is very expansive, despite the sense of urgency with all of these songs, giving Abrams a fierce drive into more interesting musical ambitions.
The sonic intensity throughout this album never really drops. “Remains” is a bombastic and amazing track on this album! The spikes of blast beats and extreme vocal parts are very satisfying and creative. The proggy tones are so infectious and engaging throughout this release. The final song, “Sirens” is a strong and impressive finish to an incredible album. It’s a less aggressive but very musical composition that further solidifies the talent and brilliance of this band. I am pretty blown away with how well Loon sounds and resonates with me. It took several listens to really latch on but Abrams have really accomplished something amazing with this record.
