Stonus – Space To Dive
Stonus is a stoner rock band that originated in Cyprus and now resides in the United Kingdom. Active since 2015, the band have released 2017’s Supertrip EP, 2018’s Lunar Eclipse EP, 2020’s Aphasia, 2021’s Séance EP, 2024’s Live in Zen, and their latest, 2026’s Space To Dive. The five-piece consists of Kyriacos Frangoulis on vocals, Nikolas Frangoulis on guitar, Pavlos Demetriou on lead guitar, Alaa Albaharna on bass and vocals, and Kotsios Demetriades on drums. Space To Dive was released on March 20th 2026, on Ripple Music. It contains ten tracks at forty nine minutes long.
Stonus brings it all out with the opener “Berlin”. Heavy, groove-laden, and progressive, they cover a large range of styles and dynamics, depicting a full and elaborate concoction of sounds. The six and a half minute track explores heavy and lighter tones for an epic introduction to their sound. The title track “Space To Dive” envelops the listener with a heavy and psychedelic expansion of rock molded with some metal double bass drumming and progressive resonance. The vocals are powerful and give the music a strong and emotive push. “Follow Me” expresses the melodies with a softer touch with denser rhythms to enhance the heavier elements of the song. The vocals soar with power and conviction on this one. “Colours” has an interesting structure of tones and melodies with an eccentric twist. Moments of fuzzy grooves are met with an almost Voivod type of tonality. My mind couldn’t process the sonic structures on the first couple of listens but then, it all connected.
Stonus is an intriguing and intricate stoner rock band. They can dish out a full fledged rocker like “Psychoactive Baby”, with the fuzzy riffing and catchy choruses, with total control and impact. There’s an airy and spacey swirl of sounds taking form on the back half of the song too, giving it more depth and substance. The excellent “Hope Dose” squashes all doubts about the band drifting off too far. It’s a vibrant and hook-driven number that fortifies the stoner grooves and rhythms with power and precision. It is one of my immediate favorites from Space To Dive, as it strikes directly with huge riffs and an energetic atmosphere.
The next three tracks “In Loop”, “Tangerine”, and “The Hermit” are all very interesting and equally engaging. They round off the second half of the recording nicely and display favorable melodies and musicianship. They finish the album with “Steiermark”, an outro of piano and background sounds that last for about two minutes. The track has a subtle fade out that ends with the first riff of the opener, “Berlin”. It was probably meant as a continuation loop to listen through the album again.
Stonus has such a deep and vast musical depth that needs to be fully explored. Space To Dive is the kind of record that was likely created with a meticulous approach to songwriting. Even after close to a dozen listens, I’m still navigating through the cosmic flow and audio intricacies of their music. An album like this requires time and space to fully appreciate. I am only starting to comprehend some of the alluring tones and I wish I had the appropriate time to go all in. This album certainly warrants that attention and focus because that’s where the music really resonates the Space To Dive.
