Kaleidobolt – Karakuchi
Kaleidobolt are a stoner rock power trio from Helsinki, Finland who blend psychedelic, retro, and progressive rock, with punk and fuzz. Formed in 2014, the band consists of Sampo Kääriäinen on guitars, lead vocals, and keyboards, Marco Menestrina on bass, vocals, keyboards, and percussion, and Mårten Gustafsson on drums. They have released five full length albums including: 2015’s Self Titled, 2016’s The Zenith Cracks, 2019’s Bitter, 2022’s This One Simple Trick, and their latest, 2026’s Karakuchi. Karakuchi was released on March 6th 2026 on Svart Records and contains nine tracks at thirty seven minutes long.
Kaleidobolt has an energetic, vibrant, and unrestrained sound that totally rocks! Lead off track “Tinkerbell” has a grandiose entrance that shuttles right into a bombastic rhythm of speed rock and old school metal. The punk fueled tones are progressive and catchy. The vocals are clean and eccentric at times with aggressive overtones mixed in. The chorus has a nice hook and the music dazzles along with rapid movements of intensity. “Lights On, Nobody Home” blazes along with speedy drumming and riffs of reckless fury. The oddball time changes and vocals are fun and amazing! Scorching rhythms of psycho-jazz are tight and whips you around in different directions. The band retain a melodic catchiness to neutralize the math rocking riffs and offbeat changes. “Coping” fuses in some King Crimson style prog with fantastic bass grooves and frantic drumming. The guitar playing is intricate at times with clean and elaborate passages floating along with the funky rhythms. The musicianship is stellar throughout Karakuchi and you can’t predict where this band is going or where they are taking you.
The three-piece has an exuberant frenzy to their music that really keeps you on your toes and guessing what will happen next. “Astro Boy/Ochanomizu” continues the audio assault of sonic schizophrenic rhythms and sprawling melodies. Scores of unrelenting drum fills, finger tapping guitar solos, and straight up rocking riffs are held together with great vocals that throw back to the classic seventies era. Kaleidobolt grooves into a psychedelic ending that gradually fades out. These first four tracks stay within the five to six minute range and really deliver an interesting and alluring experience of musical gymnastics. The songs are so dynamic and engaging and the pace moves at a swift and expeditious manner. However, the fifth track entitled “ Duuude” is a two minute fuzz festing interlude of slow pummeling doom that thoroughly devastates.
“Friends Of Fire” strikes next in a manic explosion of rock aggression. The clean vocals keep the song melodious as the riff ripping music speeds along. “A Chance Of A Lifetime” has a spectacular groove and catchy essence to it that is so rocking and satisfying. The mid-sequential ending reminds me of Captain Beyond in their enthusiastic prog rocking glory. “Turn Of Luck” begins with the drums and erupts into a riffalicious fury of blazing rock. There are moments when the band pauses and allow the vocals to shine and at times harmonize through the chaotic sonic annihilation. The ninth and final track on Karakuchi is a less than two minute instrumental finale called “Ochanomizu Returns”. The spacey and cosmic glide of the song puts the final stamp on this amazing recording.
Kaleidobolt really caught me by surprise! I wasn’t expecting this to be so enjoyable and entertaining through and through. I love the unpredictability of their music and was really blown away by how excellent this album really is. The cartoony artwork and bizarre band name and title totally took me on a loop once the incredible music started playing. This is certainly in a league of its own and I can’t help but be completely captivated by these songs. This is definitely one of the greatest musical discoveries of the year thus far.
