Temple Of The Fuzz Witch & Seum – The Conjuring EP
The Conjuring is a Split EP featuring Detroit, Michigan’s heavy blackened doom/ stoner sludge band Temple Of The Fuzz Witch and Montreal’s heavy doom n’ bass trio, Seum. Each band delivers three uncompromising tracks of massive sounds in twenty seven minutes. Canada’s premier underground music label, Black Throne Productions released this six song split on February 21st 2025.
Temple Of The Fuzz Witch formed in 2017 and released a three song EP in early 2018. They currently have three full length albums out including: 2019’s Self Titled, 2020’s Red Tide, and 2024’s Apotheosis. The current lineup consists ofNoah Bruner on vocals, guitar and synth, Scott Thayer on bass, and Cooper Arent on drums. The band’s style and sound shifted tremendously on 2024’s Apotheosis (review here) and they have never looked back! Incorporating a more diabolical black and death metal sound into their stoner doom style, Temple Of The Fuzz Witch injects a brutality in their music and wavers in harsh and clean vocals.
“Effigy” begins the record with a slow and pummeling dirge of blackened doom metal. The clean vocals start the verse and transitions right into harsh and sludgy vocals. The prodding rhythms breaks off into a blast beat, enhanced with tremolo picking, before returning to the barreling doom riffs. “Eternal Lamentation” is a more mid paced crusher with eerie riffs and nasty vocals. The death metal influences are in full effect on this one with scores of fuzzed-out tones bombarding the air waves. When the final song, “Foul Of Shades” begins, it’s an audio wasteland of swampy sludge grooves! The distorted bass begins the riff sending it into overdrive when the guitars and drums join in. The heavy and unrestrained rhythms leave holes in my chest. With paint peeling vocals, Temple Of The Fuzz Witch leaves their mark on the first half of this EP.
The Canadian three-piece Seum lays waste with the next three tracks. Featuring a guitar-less lineup of Gaspard Carrey on vocals, Piotr Ignatowicz on bass, and Frédéric Lepoutre on drums, the band sound devastating! They released two full length albums so far, 2021’s Winterized and 2023’s Double Double. They also have a few EPs, 2020’s Summer of Seum, 2022’s Blueberry Cash, and 2024’s Live at CJLO, and other various splits and singles available too.
“Dead Ear” starts off with faint wind sounds and some low end strumming. It crushes into a devastating doom riff with a full and dense sound. The tones redirect into a mid paced hammering of hardcore/ sludge with some viscous vocals. They achieve a massive sound with only drums and bass and the brutal vocals sits nicely between the audio destruction. “Problems” begins with the drums and bass and sludges into a mountainous rhythm of impending doom. They incorporate a brief sample and then it’s full on bulldozing discordant fuzz throughout the track. The menacing vocals and apocalyptic riffs carry on into the final track, “Efrit”. Tortured screams and aggressive vocals complement the dark and grisly riffs of Seum. The band has a beefy tone of monstrous proportions, with a heavy groove component also in their sound. They completely annihilate the listener from where Temple Of The Fuzz Witch left off.
Whenever I crave angry and aggressive music, The Conjuring EP is a fitting choice to satisfy my rage. Both bands sound different from each other but collectively deliver a heavy walloping of evil sounds. This will connect with individuals into the extreme side of the heavy underground and is the likely soundtrack for blowing off some steam and dealing with debilitating stress.
