Morrison Graves – Under The Weight Of Gravity EP

Morrison Graves can be described as a pre-doom/ post-psychedelic heavy rock band from Portland, Oregon. They blend sounds of atmospheric heavy psych with idiosyncratic garage rock. The core members of the band include: Ryan Brown on vocals, guitar, organ, bass, and tambourine, Gary Jimmerson on guitar, sitar, mellotron, organ, and percussion, Brent Jones on drums and guitar, and Michelle Muldrow on bass and vocals. Morrison Graves formed sometime during the pandemic and released their debut album, 2023’s Division Rising with good acclaim. They most recently released 2026’s Under the Weight of Gravity EP on July 17th, which contains five tracks at seventeen minutes long.

“Home” begins the EP with a heroic dose of fuzzy guitar tones and psychedelic swirlings of hard rock and melody. The vocals capture a strong retro-vibe of classic rock and works nicely with the band’s signature sound. The music crescendos naturally with organ arrangements and guitar leads mixed in. It has a lot of interesting textures and sounds and makes for a very interesting composition. The second track, entitled “The Swarm” is another eccentric song with a variance of tones, creating a mind numbing sensation. The bouncy rhythms are met with psychedelic quirks of excellence.

The third song is called “Alice” and it’s great! The subdued vocals and tonal retro-twisted sound is soothing and satisfying. Morrison Graves has a beautifully divine and dark resonance that  speaks in dense sonic waves of creativity. “In The Mourning” swells with hard rock and ambience in such a striking way that hypnotizes the listener. The music sounds both primal and futuristic and it’s very abstract and interesting too.

The last track entitled “Recycled Fragments” is a mind altering admission. It’s a short transcendental outro of cosmic synapses of audio drones and sonic textures. The psychedelic vocals sound trippy and the less than two minute song, completes Under The Weight Of Gravity with an outlandish finish. I really enjoy this EP and a band like Morrison Graves. They definitely have an original sound that explores many styles of music. The band name has no affiliation with Jim Morrison and The Doors but you could argue that they have some similarities in a few different parts of some of the arrangements. However, Morrison Graves are their own entity and they deliver a variety of sounds that are as equally impressive as comprehensive.
