Hey Satan – Flamingoes EP
Hey Satan is a hard rocking stoner/ grunge band from Lausanne, Switzerland. The three piece currently consists of François on vocals and guitars, Reno on bass, and Frank on drums. The band formed in 2014 and have released two full length albums, 2017’s Self Titled and 2019’s Orange Moon. They also have a three song EP, 2021’s King Barry, and just released their latest EP called Flamingoes. Containing four tracks in sixteen minutes, Flamingoes was released on January 31st 2025, on Cold Smoke Records.
“Rubicon” opens the record with a great display of solid, tight knitted hard rock. Fuzzy stoner grooves blended with excellent melody and great vocals. Hey Satan smoothly consolidates riff rock, psychedelic, and maybe some alternative rock also. They have a free flowing vibe to their song crafting and integrate the heavy and light dynamics brilliantly. “Rubicon” has an alluring chill essence about it with the music itself and the way François sings. Around the mid point of the song, the band escalates the rhythm until around the 3:20 mark. They proceed to crank out a heavy stoner groove and douse some psychedelic leads on top.
The title track “Flamingoes” fades in with feedback into an unfaltering but fleeting guitar riff. The bass and drums command the verse with the vocals, and the guitar flourishes in and out in the first couple of measures. Those little subtleties accentuates the sound nicely. Once the guitars engage into the song, everything sounds fully enhanced. The band drift back to the Motörhead style verses with the fuzzy bass leading the rhythm. François even has a raspiness in his voice on this song. The accented guitar noises display a raging psychedelic aura. Hey Satan crank out some high octane riffage at the end of the track to finish it off with some potent energy.
The third track is called “Digital Boys With Knives”. The hi-hat and drums start things off and quickly powers in the righteous fuzz. The suave drumming from Frank even lays down some cow bell action in the beginning. The song is a groove machine with segments of noise rocking leads sprinkled in. Another great element to this song and the others too, is the bass playing from Reno. He’s got a great pronounced tone and adroitness to his style. The guitar playing of François is exceptionally proficient and skillful also, which guides these songs into some very exciting musical terrain.
The final track “Monster” is just that. It has a riffalicious flow throughout its four and a half minute run time. It’s a spellbinding instrumental that takes you on a journey. The song shifts and undulates for the duration and sends you on a riff rocking audio adventure. Hey Satan are connoisseurs of modern day desert rock. If present day rock music was popular and actually a thing that most people were into, then this band would be all the rage. Their sound is both outstanding and assessable.
