Frankie And The Witch Fingers is a hard progressive, psychedelic, garage, indie rock band from Los Angeles, California. Formed in Indiana in 2013, they consist of Dylan Sizemore on lead vocals and guitar, Josh Menashe on lead guitar and vocals, Nikki Pickle on bass and vocals, Jon Modaff on synths, and Nick Anguilar on drums. The band has released many albums including: 2015’s Self Titled, 2016’s Heavy Roller, 2017’s Sidewalk, 2017’s Brain Telephone, 2019’s ZAM, 2020’s Monsters Eating People Eating Monsters…, 2023’s Data Doom, 2024’s Live at LEVITATION., and 2025’s Live at KEXP. They just released their latest album, 2025’s Trash Classic on June 6th on RAS/ Greenway. It contains eleven tracks at forty five minutes long.
I first discovered Frankie And The Witch Fingers just before Data Doom (review here) was released. I remember being really intrigued with their style and sound and have been a fan of their music ever since. The band has a unique take on psychedelic and progressive, with a jubilant mix of garage punk and indie rock. Trash Classic capitalizes on the frantic punk frenzy and utilizes more electronic sounds into their music.
Trash Classic starts with “Channel Rot”, an introduction of sorts that samples channel changing static and programming noises into synth textures and heavy rock accents. The song blends right into “T.V.Baby”, a hyper active rocker that mixes cyber-punk, heavy psych, and prog rock. The vocals are unique as always, in their almost UK punk and B52s like fashion. The music is fast and furious and cranks out some heavy riffage on a few parts. “Dead Silence” starts with tapping drums and clean circus-like guitars that cranks into a nice fuzzy rhythm enhanced by synthesizing intonations. The music dazzles all across the musical spectrum on most of these tracks and this song is only the beginning. The catchy and quirky vocals are another side show that the band expresses. “Fucksake” has a swinging drum beat that fastens the cyber-punk sounds even more. It’s another vibrant tune of schizophrenic tones and punchy grooves.
The fifth track “Economy” really explores the electronica side of their sound. It has a bizarre dance component to the music that is very experimental and almost new wave. It’s still full tilt boogie and the vocals are thoroughly engaging. “Eggs Laid Brain” is also electronically enhanced and has a zesty punk animation to the music. The band really relishes in the robotic audio tones with these tracks, as is the case with “Out Of The Flesh”. The song has a hyper rock feel and a catchy chorus to boot. The guitars are noisy and self moving with layers of atmospheric bliss blanketing the song. “Total Reset” is a classic Frankie And The Witch Fingers type of song that would have fit nicely on their last record, Data Doom. It’s a tasty number with a lot of psych rocking and progressive elements wrapped around it. The vocals are out there front and center, and the music storms along with a fury of peculiar and offbeat intensity.
“Conducting Experiments” begins with a solid drum beat (with claps!) and a funky bass line that grooves. The song is very catchy and big on the synth and psych sounds. It has a bouncy and exuberant dance vibe going on for sure. “Gutter Priestess” explodes right in with more vivacity and high energy tones. The angular guitars are soaring with the spirited rhythms and jolted vocals. The last song on the album is the title track “Trash Classic”. It’s another fast raging number at the start. The band continues to articulate syncopated prog with off kilter grooves. The song explores some twists of mind altering psychedelia just after the two minute mark. The trippy synth sounds are expansive and hallucinogenic as the song progresses in a jamming rhythm of rock fusion. It’s the longest song on the record nearing eight minutes and chock full of psychotic fever and feral velocity.
Frankie And The Witch Fingers is the type of band that you can’t really categorize. They derive many different musical styles and strategize the most eccentric components of indie rock ever imagined. The atypical sounds and perplexing rhythms are the fuel that drives the music into such unexpected and unorthodox territory. Trash Classic is the band at their most unconventional and wacky while transcending prog rock and electro-psych music into a hook friendly mix of punk and pop. Frankie And The Witch Fingers further prove that their musical reach continues to soar into new heights.
