Acid Mammoth – Supersonic Megafauna Collision
Acid Mammoth is a heavy doom metal band from Athens, Greece. They formed in 2015 and consist of Chris Babalis Jr. on vocals and guitar, Dimosthenis Varikos on bass, Marios Louvaris on drums, and Chris Babalis Sr. on guitar. Acid Mammoth has released 2017’s Self Titled, 2020’s Under Acid Hoof, 2020’s Doom Sessions Vol 2/ Split with 1782, 2021’s Caravan, and their latest 2024’s Supersonic Megafauna Collision, which came out on April 5th 2024, released on Heavy Psych Sounds. The album contains six songs and is forty two minutes long.
The title track “Supersonic Megafauna Collision” starts the record with a pounding menace of heavy doom metal. The brutal Sabbath worship music is uncomprehendingly steady with heavy riffing throughout. Chris Babalis Jr’s vocals has a higher Ozzy like register tone about them and corollate well with the music.“Fuzzorgasm (Keep On Screaming)” trudges along with a more brutal battling ram of riffs. The song has some cool guitar leads that jive in well with the mega riffing. The songs mostly average around six plus minutes each. “Garden Of Bones” is another heavy bashing song that has some nice double bass drumming going on too. Chris Babalis Jr’s voice is haunting on this track and the guitar leads have a bleak scream about them.
The fourth track “Atomic Shaman” is a little more up paced then some of the others but still crushes with intensity. “One With The Void” changes up the style by incorporating clean guitars into the mix. The song has some cool tribal percussion mixed in as well and the vocals are a little bit lower in register for the entire song. The last track on Supersonic Megafauna Collision is called “Tusko’s Last Trip”. The nearly twelve minute closure is a mixture of barreling doom metal with clean guitar elements. The avalanche of rhythmic sirens into mammoth riffing are combined nicely into this song. Acid Mammoth has a sound that’s unapologetic to bowing at the alter of Black Sabbath but they derive enough doom metal originality on their own to warrant props and praise.
