Hermano – Clisson, France
Hermano is a super group of sorts featuring: John Garcia (Kyuss, Sloburn, Unida, Vista Chino, John Garcia & The Band Of Gold, and other solo recordings) on vocals, David Angstrom (Supafuzz , Black Cat Bone, and Luna Sol) on guitar, Dandy Brown (Orquesta del Desierto, John Garcia, Alice Tambourine Lover, Yawning Sons, and Lorquin’s Admiral) on bass, Mike Callahan (Earshot) on guitar, Chris Leathers (Supafuzz) on drums. Their discography includes: 2002’s Only A Suggestion, 2004’s Dare I Say, 2005’s Live At W2, 2007’s Into The Exam Room, and 2024’s When The Moon Was High EP (review here), released after signing with Ripple Music. Their latest live album was recorded at Hellfest in the summer of 2016 and finally made available for the first time now. Entitled Clisson, France, the Ripple Music released album features twelve tracks at fifty minutes long.
I have to be honest and say that I’m not usually a huge fan of live albums for the most part. There have been some that sound great but I usually dismiss them for one reason or another. However, seeing bands perform live in person is one of my favorite things to do! The energy of a live band playing mostly in small clubs is a drug for me. I love it and will always support live music from bands that I really dig! So after hearing this new Hermano live recording, I can only imagine on how incredible that show must have been to witness live. This recording slays and sounds incredible! It was no doubt recorded from the sound board but without all the studio trickery and over dubs that some “live” albums have. It’s raw and pure and captures the magical moment that the band experienced in front of a very large crowd in Clisson, France.
The details of this recording are found on the record’s Bandcamp page and states: “Recording albums and touring when they wanted to since their formation nearly three decades ago, Hermano has always consistently refused to operate on anyone’s schedule other than their own. Lured by the repeated calls of their devoted fans, though, the band first reunited for a stirring performance at Hellfest in Clisson, France, in the summer of 2016. Eight years removed from their last live performance, they arrived in Clisson with time to rehearse through their material for a couple of hours before taking the stage. In what has been hailed as the most thrilling set of the 2016 edition of Hellfest, that evening the audience witnessed a band hitting on all cylinders, a performance so energetic and seamless that those in attendance were in awe that the band had not performed together since 2008. Captured on both audio and video, “Clisson, France” promises to be one of the most magical and significant live releases of 2026.” The band performed songs from all three of their studio albums and one that was unreleased, (the song “Love” appeared on 2024’s When The Moon Was High EP, for the first time).
The twelve song set list includes: “Left Side Bleeding”, “The Bottle”, “Cowboys Suck”, “5 to 5”, “Senor Moreno’s Plan”, “My Boy”, “Love”, “Is This Ok?”, “Alone Jeffe”, “Kentucky”, “Manager’s Special”, and “Angry American”. The performance is mixed nicely and all the instruments are heard loud and clear. Garcia’s voice is amazing as usual and after listening to this live record, I really want to see Hermano live! This band will always have a special place in my heart probably because I discovered them when Only A Suggestion first came out. From that point on, I have always had a big interest in this band and will continue to support whatever releases and recordings that may resurface or become available for my listening pleasure. For live recordings, Clisson, France is a wonderful listen and highly recommended for any fan of good stoner rock music.
