Gutward – I

Gutward are a stoner/ doom metal band from Jakarta, Indonesia. The trio consist of Dafiq Achmad on vocals and guitar, Nabiel Habibie on bass, and Paskahline Putra on drums. The band just released their debut full length album called I on June 6th 2026, on Supernaut Sound Production. It contains six tracks at thirty five minutes long.

“Reign Of The Wicked” begins with a slow accent of atmospheric layers that erupt into a fuzzy and sludge-filled rhythm. The heavy stoner doom sound is massive with a pummeling of riffs that puts you in a trance. The vocals have an almost echo-effect tone of clean singing resonating with the impending doom metal sound. Gutward has a familiar style of brooding and devastating riffs amassed in stoner glory. “What’s With The Rush” steamrolls ahead with dense and swampy rhythms laced with hypnotic vocals. The sound quality on I is thick like molasses with a rawness that brutalizes their sound further.

The third track entitled “Dead Eyes”, starts with the bass and drums and cranks into a sludge fuzz of heavy riffage. “Mass Delusion” begins with the guitars and forges ahead in annihilating fashion. The swampy Sabbath style of doom is intoxicating at times and the vocals continue to mesmerize with cosmic effects in the background. The thick and crunchy “Rot Alone” is a haunting mass of distortion and savagery. The beating of the pounding drums and the menacing riffs are a doom metal lover’s delight.

The final track on this excellent album is called “The Messages”. The nearly twelve minute finale begins with clean guitars that storm into a colossal doom ensemble. The slow and prodding beating of fuzzed-out guitars and thunderous drumming are joined with trance-like vocals that soothes you into sonic hypnosis. Gutward are not reinventing the wheel but they deliver a walloping of stoner doom that should satisfy the cravings of most enthusiasts. I look forward to hearing more from this band and it will be curious to see where they will take their music in the next couple of years.
