Üga Büga – Valley Of The Wolf

Üga Büga is a heavy stoner/ sludge metal band from Virginia. The trio play an eclectic mix of hard rock and heavy metal with doom and psychedelic elements blended in. They consist of Calloway Jones on guitars, vocals, and keys, Niko Cvetanovich on bass, backing vocals, and keys, and Jimmy Czywczynski on drums and backing vocals. Formed in 2021, the band have released two demos: 2023’s Eye Of The Storm and Change My Name, their debut album, 2024’s Year Of The Hog, and their latest sophomore release, 2026’s Valley Of The Wolf. Valley Of The Wolf was released on June 20th 2026 on Büga Bois Industries and contains ten tracks at forty eight minutes long.

“Divine Slaughter (Backyard Barbecue Bonanza)” starts off Valley Of The Wolf with a raging rock explosion. Hard driving riffs pummel into bursts of blast beats with aggressive vocals. The music quickly shifts into chugging groove metal before entering a hard rocking rhythm with clean vocals. Üga Büga plays around with these variables and mixes in some funky circus rock with noisy elements strewed in also. On the surface, it would seem like all of these musical variables wouldn’t work together. Remarkably, everything fits together perfectly! “Earthsuckers” storms on with the old Mastodon-ian method of brutality. Sludgy slabs of dense riffs powered by some nice double bass drumming and an onslaught of fuzzy tones, Üga Büga splices in the melody and clean vocals sparingly but very effectively.

The title track, “Valley Of The Wolf” has a bulldozing and thrashy rhythm with some varied vocal approaches. The aggressive vocals are less prominent on this one, favoring a more cleaner tonality with the singing. Things continue to get a little more bizarre with “Ghost in the Diamond Cage”. The slow blues-scale beginning with the clean vocals taking charge is a little departure from the more metal induced sound of the first few tracks. I actually really appreciate and enjoy the variety in their sound. You can’t pigeonhole or really categorize Üga Büga’s sound at all. One moment, the listener is being clobbered with heavy riffs and in the next, beautiful keys or clean guitars are soothing your ear holes.

The fifth track called “Mötorhog”, strikes next. Starting with a drum roll into a blazing rhythm, the song returns to the energetic relapse of metal. “Nail That Binds” cycles in the aggressive vocals with the mostly cleanly sung composition. It’s a schizophrenic scorcher of frenzied rock doused in metal. “The Sand Witch” is another crusher! Üga Büga throws in the kitchen sink of sounds into this track. It begins in a more traditional rock and metal fashion but the eccentric twists are soon captured. The band explore some psychedelic territory midway through but return with a flurry of powerful leads and stomping riffs.

“Divination” is another heavy metal rager! The mostly heavy track does feature the more mellow passages in certain sections but mostly cranks out an unrelenting and hard driven groove. “Descent” is a minute prelude or introduction of pounding drums and ambience tones that fade into the last track called “Revolting Power”. The almost nine minute closer, begins with clean guitars and tribal-esc drums. After a minute and a half, the song transitions into a thrashy delight of metal glory. Thunderous percussion and the crushing riffs of destruction are all over this one. Üga Büga still deliver the more mellow musical inclusion of softer tones and nuances. The dynamic shift between the clean and harsh sounds are so satisfying and very natural for the band to pull off.

Valley Of The Wolf is a terrific album that has an unpredictable twist of heavy and softer sounds weaved together. I love when I can’t quite put my finger on a band’s sound or style but it appeals to me on a lot of different levels. Üga Büga are amazing in their organization and execution of what they coin as “hog rock.” I find myself very intrigued with their music and repeatedly trying to understand everything that’s happening within each of these ten insightful tracks.
